Following the scholarships, all seniors were recognized with a list of their awards and future plans. Dancers win awards at Dance Champs competition in K.C. Seven local Dance Sensations’ students took home awards from the Dance Champs competition held April 12-13 in Kansas City. Soloists earning an Elite Platinum in their respective categories were Delta Halley, hip hop; Grace Choate, ballet; and Allison Sweaney, ballet. Mason Dority and Allision Sweaney also earned an Elite Platinum with their lyrical duet as did Katie Dotson and Delta Halley with their tap duet. Bella Snider and Zoe Sipes took home a Star Platinum with their jazz duet as did Choate, Dotson and Halley with their ballet trio. This was the first competition for all seven dancers. The dancers study ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, tap and pointe at Dance Sensations, a studio located just off the square in Buffalo since 2010. Learning to eat nutritiously is key to healthy families The inaugural Cooking is the Cure cooking class was held on March 18. Dr. Taylor Pedersen’s Show Me Strong Kids initiative identified nutrition and lack of family involvement as key issues children experience in Dallas County. Dallas County Family Medical Center started the first cooking class by starting with the basics, with families cooking together in the kitchen. This program is one of the first classes to address issues children experience and provide ways to help them overcome them. Oakstar Bank presents a check to DCR-1 OakStar Bank presented Dr. Tim Ryan, Superintendent of the Dallas County R-1 School District, with a check for $4,420.41 for proceeds from OakStar Bank’s School Debit Card Program. Since 2016, Dallas County Schools have received more than $20,000 as a result of the program that makes a donation based on purchases made by OakStar Bank customers who use their Bison Card. Letter to the Editor Many of us at the Montgomery Senior Center have great concerns about our crossing the street to get into the center without getting run over. There have been many close calls. What would it take to get the city of Buffalo to put a flashing light or better signage to alert the drivers to slow down? I understand our Board has contacted the city and were told it cost too much. What has to happen, one of us getting hit by a vehicle or someone getting killed, you can’t put a cost on someone’s life. It would be nice to come up with a solution for this problem. Letter to the Editor Dear Friends and Neighbors of the City of Buffalo/Dallas County R-1 Schools: More opinion Elkland man suffers serious injuries in car crash At 4 p.m. on May 3, 2024, Donald Miner, 62, Elkalnd, was headed west on MO 38, eight miles west of Buffalo, in a 1999 Plymouth Neon, when James R. Wilson, 18, Buffalo, headed east in a 2003 Ford F150, turned left into the path of Miner. The impact caused serious injuries to Miner and he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The Ford F150 faced moderate damage and the Plymouth Neon faced extensive damage. Both drivers were wearing a safety device. State of Missouri vs. Taylor Nicole Tweten Taylor Nicole Tweten, Fair Grove, born in 2002, was charged by Dallas County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan D. Barker in Dallas County Circuit Court with the class E felony of driving without a valid license on or about February 1, 2024. DCR-1 to apply for the 21st Community Learning Centers Grant The Dallas County School district will be applying for the next cohort of 21st CCLC grants. The school district has been awarded three consecutive five year grants. The grant allows for before and after school programming for Dallas County Students. The program allows a safe and engaging place for students in those crucial hours that families are commuting to and from work. Adult education and family engagement is an active part of this program as well. The due date for the application is at the end of May and we hope to hear of award by the end of June. School ends and summer fun begins Seasonal work, batting cages and the local drive-in are open. Families can enjoy all the benefits of working and living in Dallas County. The greenhouses are open to plant the colors of the season. The lake is a short drive away for fishing, boating and beaches. Ice cream is served across the county to help cool down hot summer days. Freshly mowed lawns are releasing that summertime fragrance all around.
